The Exhibition:
since 2012
The Artwork:
Over 1700 letters were sent to Oliver, a fictive person. Because of insufficient address details,
they were returned to the sender c/o the respective exhibition venue or art institution.
“To Oliver” is a conceptual and simultaneously aesthetically visual, analog work, ongoing since 2012—a kind of diary in the form of written personal letters. The work is both poetic and political, exploring the German-German past and current events. It stages nonverbal communication using national and international postage stamps, thereby also addressing the theme of travel and the apparent dissolution of borders, leading to a reflection on the concept of home.
Questions about the archiving of data, the whereabouts and status of digitally sent messages and online posts are juxtaposed with traditional written communication, the “real” handwritten letter, which remains as a tangible, material relic.
