Joanna Schulte's expansive installation, "We've got to get in to get out and Outside is the opposite of Inside," in the large exhibition space of the KUBUS, shifts the relationship between naturalness and artificiality, nature and urbanity. Her complex installation offers us a guided path along a boardwalk made of wooden planks. As we walk, visitors discover plant remains, collages, graffiti, plastic animals, resting places, sounds, smells, film, and much more. Joanna Schulte presents us with urban aesthetics outside the cities. On her hikes and research, the artist encounters abandoned architecture, reclaimed by graffiti artists, birch trees, or wild herbs. At the same time, she places objects from nature into the art space in her installation, creating a fusion of outside and inside, exterior and interior, that is as contradictory as it is poetic. Walking along her boardwalk, we are invited to reflect on the duality of our world. And ultimately, on where we are headed—between critique of civilization and self-discovery.
